No valves and no keys. Seven positions, and everything between them — which is why a trombone can slide from one note to the next instead of stepping.

Three valves, pressed in combination, give seven lengths of tubing — the same seven pitches the trombone finds with its slide, except these ones click into place.

The only one of the three that isn't brass. A cane reed vibrates against the mouthpiece and the keys open holes down the body — closer to a clarinet than to a trombone.
